0.01650g of an organic compound on a combustion analysis give 0.03153g CO2 and 0.01937g H2O. What is the percentage of C and H in compound? Also calculate the empirical formula.

0.01650g of an organic compound on a combustion analysis give 0.03153g CO2 and 0.01937g H2O.  What is the percentage of C and H in compound?  Also calculate the empirical formula.

Solution:-

wt of sample = 0.01650g
wt of CO2 = 0.03153g M.wt of CO2 = 44g/mol

wt of H2O = 0.01937g   = M.wt of H2O = 18g/mol

Now
1 mole (44g) CO2 contain C = 12g
0.0315g CO2 contain C =   = 0.0085909 g
It means that
0.01650 g sample contain C = 0.0085909g

100g sample contain C =  x 100
= 52.07% C
