Exam Pattern-
CSIR has been maintaining the same pattern for the last few years. It is explained below. The exam is divided into three sections or parts named Part A, Part B and Part C respectively.
- Part A contains 20 questions from general aptitude, reasoning and basic knowledge of English grammar. Every question carries a weightage of two marks (+2) each for a correct answer and a half mark (-0.5) as a penalty for every incorrect answer. Students can respond to a maximum of 15 questions from the 20 questions which makes Part A worth up to 30 marks.
- Part B contains 40 questions from chemistry of two marks (+2) each for a correct answer and a half mark (-0.5) as a penalty for every incorrect answer. Students can respond to a maximum of 35 questions out of the 40 questions which makes this part of the exam worth up to 70 marks.
- Part C contains 60 questions from chemistry of two marks (+4) each for a correct answer and a half mark (-1.0) as a penalty for every incorrect answer. Students can respond to a maximum of 25 questions from the 60 questions which makes Part C worth up to 100 marks.
Parts A, B, and C offer marks up to 30, 70, and 100 respectively which makes the exam of total 200 marks.
Syllabus & Important Chapters
The syllabus for the Chemical Sciences Subject for CSIR NET is explained below. All chapters are mentioned and distributed among three major branches of chemistry that are, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry.
- All three sections of Chemistry i.e. Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry carry almost equal weight in the exam. However, among a specific section (say Inorganic Chemistry), there are only 3 chapters that carry 75% weightage of the entire Inorganic Chemistry. So, we have made a list of some important chapters from all three sections of chemistry which will surely give you a double-digit rank in All India.

Expected cut-offs
Predicting the cut-offs is impossible without looking at the level of the exam. Hard exams lead to lower cut-off marks and easy exams lead to a much higher one. We can predict the cut-off only by analyzing the exam level. However, we can predict a safe score. If you aim for this score, you will definitely be eligible for NET and JRF.
Strategy for the exam
If you desire to crack the exam with a good rank, these tips will surely help you.
- Multiple Revisions: Understanding a concept is just the first step. Remembering it until the exam time is the next hurdle. You need to take multiple revision sessions for all important chapters. Keep revisiting your own notes of all chapters as many times as possible. We recommend that you revise every chapter at least twice a month when the exam is less than three months away. Multiple revisions will help you to retain that information inside your brain.
- Solve MCQs: When you have understood a chapter and revised it multiple times, the next step is to solve the previous year's questions. For important chapters as mentioned in this article, try to solve a total of 50-60 MCQs on those important chapters. Some MCQs bring a whole new concept in front of you. Note that down, include that in your notes, and revisit that during multiple revisions. New concepts are more frequently repeated in the CSIR NET exam.
- Attempt Mock Tests: There are multiple websites including our own ChemContent where you can easily find downloadable previous year question papers and try to attempt it like a mock test. You can set a timer on your mobile phone calculate your score, and analyze your performance later.
- Do not repeat your mistakes: The concepts that are giving you negative marks in mock tests need special attention. Because, those are the concepts which you think you understand, but you really don't. We will suggest revisiting those concepts and collecting additional information about them so that you don't repeat your mistakes.
