Well don’t expect initial salaries of 15–20 lpa by studying Chemistry… That is mostly reserved for top engineers and managers from top notch business and engineering schools…
At the current scenario you can have the following jobs which are decent paying, gives good work-life balance and other benefits..
- Teaching: By far the best as far as number of jobs is concerned..Govt school teachers earn decently and a lot of them earn extra by the means of private tution…Not bad at all…There are always vacancies in degree colleges, engineering colleges,universities and research institutes as assistant professors or scientists as chemistry, being a core subject is taught everywhere. These jobs are well paying, satisfying and prestigious but one at least needs to be a PhD with preferably a post doctoral experience from abroad for getting a chance.
- Jobs in Govt Sector/PSU’s : A lot of Govt departments like GSI, DRDO, BARC and PSU’s like ONGC ,OIL etc recruit Officers or scientists with M Sc Chemistry as background. They pay well (though not as well as Google, oracle , Apple, Facebook etc), give job stability and decent work-life balance.
- Jobs in Private Sector: High paying jobs are there for some speciality branches like organic synthesis, polymer science etc…Here also, a mere B Sc or M Sc will not serve ones purpose for a higher level post… At least having a PhD degree with the above mentioned expertise helps better.
- Diversification: Chemistry being a core science subject, one can diversify into other branches like biochemistry/biotechnology/Computational Chemistry etc after graduating with Chemistry…Biotechnology is supposed to create a large numbers of jobs in the coming decade. Here too, the person having higher degrees with expertise in latest techniques will be at advantage
- Chemistry is one of those subject which are in popular demand in almost every industry .It's one's own passion what field he opt for ,matching his knowledge in particular field, financial status , living standards one searches for.After msc in chemistry the road diverges to various fields it's depends on one own interest in any field.The handsome carrier option to adhere after Msc in chemistry can be: :
1.Research field
After msc you can go for research and complete phd under a good professor as it will bring stability in your carrier by adding a new dimension in your knowledge.If one qualified the CSIR-NET JRF exam with good marks then they get fellowship for mphil/phd.For first two years qualifying students are given JRF and after evaluating your research work you are awarded SRF for next 3 years .So the total fellowship is for 5 years.you can go for research in various IITs,IISc,IISER,Bangalore ,CSIR funded labs or many other reputed University. It will ease your research as you will get good stipend during your research.
2.Academics
After pursuing MSC if you qualify UGC NET you can apply for the post of assistant professor post in various government college if you are interested in the field of academics Now the government is going to make phd degree necessary for the post of assistant professor .It will give you a handsome salary with a good piece of mind .After msc you can clear bed exam to get a job of teacher in +2 colleges and work as a post graduate teacher.You can also opt for private coaching institute .If you have completed msc from IIT by clearing IIT JAM then you can give GATE exam (graduate aptitude test in engineering) to teach in engineering colleges or to work as a government engineer.
Industry
To work in PSUs like IOCL, BPCL,HPCL,ONGC,Power corporation of India,NTPC,BHEL limited you have to clear GATE exam . because it demands Valid GATE score.
Without qualifying any exam :—There is a huge demand of chemists in various industries like Paint,cement, agriculture (seeds and pesticides),food industry, sanitation industry,ceramic,paper, plastic and isomers, industry,textile industry, forensic science as a trainee.Ther are various posts like quality inspector,examiner, production officer,lab chemist,lab assistant ,safety and environmental officer,R&D officer.The hiring of chemist is done by many private firms like Dabur,ranbaxy,HUL,Sun Pharma, independent research firms and many other pharmaceutical companies and company related to life style at a good salary.
Now a days all foreign company be it's pharmaceutical or industry related with life style are choosing India for their research and development (r&d) service and setting up their unit in both India.The promotion of India in ease of doing business ranking and various government initiative related with normalising various regulations of setting up unit in India also pushes these company to start their production and manufacturing .So there is a great opportunities for chemist to work in these companies.If we work for a longer time with a company and earn depth of knowledge and experience it will also open the door to work in foreign firms with good salary.
Government jobs
SSC and upsc also releases vacancy as geoscientist to work as lab assistant in government supported laboratory and also in BARC (Bhabha atomic energy agency ) or DRDO for candidates having requisite knowledge in that field.There is also posts for sanitation officer in railway and in Nagar Nigam.There is also vacancy for food inspector and in FCI which are filled by SSC exam.
Lastly it's your choice to opt for a particular field.some field demand ample time and perseverance to excel and to earn a good salary.In my view if you have a passion for a particular field then opt it and stick with it .It will must bear sweet fruits just needs perseverance and hard work there is also a proverb regarding this that “Rome was not built in a day”.

Chemistry graduates end up in a varied number of careers following a BSc, MSc or PhD.
The furthest any of my BSc Chemistry classmates got in their career was to be appointed Vice President of the Texaco oil company. After that he became chairman of Texaco in a certain European country. After that he became the CEO of the largest independent Gas Station company in a major European country.
Another classmate who completed a PhD in NMR got a job in a major oil company, but did not end up in “top management”. Staying within the lab service department. He drifted away from that oil company into a career as a software engineer. He had done a joint BSc in Maths and Chemistry. A few years ago he qualified as a school Maths teacher. He is in his mid-50s now.
A girl in my class who only got a 3rd class Hons degree, got a job as a Precious metals dealer in an Investment bank. She said she got the job because chemists are familiar with the names of the other precious metals, not just gold, silver and platinum. Her father was a Professor at UCL, and she had attended an expensive private school and spoke with a posh voice. I'm sure those were factors for her landing a job like that with only a 3rd class degree.
Another chap in my class with only got a 3rd got a job with BP. His father was a BP executive. Presumably that's how he got in with less than the 2.2 minimum grade stipulated in their literature.
Another girl in the class with a 3rd got a job as a trainee chartered accountant in a major accounting firm in London.
Another three of my class mates completed MSc conversion courses in Computer Science. One of them now lives, since 1990, in the San Francisco bay area. Another lives in Toronto.
I’ve ended up as a jeweller /gemmologist after working as an Analytical Chemist and a career switch into the oil services industry after completing MSc’s in Corrosion Engineering, and in Pipeline Engineering. I’m also dabbling in cryptocurrencies right now as a Day trader hoping to get rich like some of my classmates.
Postgraduate opportunities for chemists generally speaking include :
