PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Physics within the discipline of magnetic materials
The project aims to produce and characterize hard and soft magnetic nanowires and combine them to form hard-soft nanocomposites. The nanowires are generated using a novel technique based on magnetic-field-directed self-assembly of nanoparticles produced by spark ablation. The successful candidate will be involved in producing nanoparticles, generating magnetic nanowires and nanocomposites, and the structural and magnetic characterization. The characterization will be performed using electron microscopy, magnetometry, and synchrotron-based spectroscopy and imaging techniques at the MaxIV laboratory and other large-scale facilities worldwide. Hence, the doctoral student will gain comprehensive experience in several characterization tools for nanomaterials. The project is primarily experimental and will require extensive work in different laboratories but will also involve programming to handle and analyze data and theoretical work such as setting up models for interpreting the data. The doctoral student is expected to work independently and in close collaboration with researchers carrying out other tasks within the project.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Plant Molecular Biology
Biology is the broad subject about all living things. It encompasses everything from processes at the molecular and cellular level to global processes at ecosystem level. The subject is divided into a range of sub-disciplines and specialisations. The PhD programme at the Department of Biology includes many of these specialisations, from molecular biology to applied ecology, from viruses and individual cells to evolutionary biology and global biodiversity. Taking on research studies at the Department of Biology generally means focusing on a delimited part of the research area of biology and may include field studies, experiments, theoretical studies, or a combination of these.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Industrial Design: Reflexivity in Design
The specific PhD-candidate position in Industrial Design is being offered in the research area of Reflexivity in Design, which seeks a deeper understanding of how knowledge flows between various practices and communities within the field. Presently, there is limited meaningful integration of design scholarship and design practice, and the resulting divide between the perceived roles of design ‘theory’ and ‘practice’, presents an obstacle to mutual knowledge transfer, effective learning, and collective reflection in the field. The aim of this doctoral position is to explore how the field of design and its various forms of organisation and knowledge are reproduced, and through the experimental medium of a design project, to create and implement new epistemological, social, and material resources to further integrate the field.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Technology and Society with focus on traffic safety and advanced statistical methods
The Department of Technology and Society, Transport and Roads Division has received funds for a European Research Council (ERC) project focusing on the development of a new method for analysing safety of infrastructure in future mobility scenarios, including vehicle automation. The project aims to build a realistic simulation environment to study how the infrastructure affects the interaction of different road users and model it in a mathematical way to predict severe events. The successful PhD candidate will work in strict contact with the Traffic Safety Virtual Reality Hub at Lund University.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in theoretical computer science and/or combinatorial optimization
The PhD student will be working in the Mathematical Insights into Algorithms for Optimization (MIAO) group (https://jakobnordstrom.github.io/miao-group/) headed by Jakob Nordström (https://jakobnordstrom.github.io/), which is active at both Lund University and the University of Copenhagen. The MIAO research group has a unique profile in that we are doing cutting-edge research both on the mathematical foundations of efficient computation and on state-of-the-art practical algorithms for real-world problems. This creates a very special environment, where we do not only conduct in-depth research on different theoretical and applied topics, but where different lines of research cross-fertilise each other and unexpected and exciting synergies often arise. Much of the activities of the group revolve around powerful algorithmic paradigms such as, e.g., Boolean satisfiability (SAT) solving, Gröbner basis computations, integer linear programming, and constraint programming. This leads to classical questions in computational complexity theory—though often with new, fascinating twists—but also involves work on devising clever algorithms that can exploit the power of such paradigms in practice.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student in culture and creativity
Culture and creativity are playing an increasingly important political and economic role in society, even outside the traditional cultural and creative sectors. Cultural and creative activities are often embedded in complex networks of public, private and civil-sector actors and resources, and many times take the form of services. We are now strengthening our research profile in this field. The department welcomes high-quality research proposals with an explicit social science approach to the cultural and creative sectors, markets, or the organization and management of culture and creative ventures. The proposed research should have a clear connection to a service studies perspective on the cultural or creative sector

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Energy Sciences with focus on fuel cell systems
The project focuses on fuel cell systems for heavy-duty vehicles. Fuel cells powered by renewable hydrogen have the potential to combine energy efficiency and climate neutrality with zero emissions of harmful substances. For the fuel cell to function in the vehicle, it must operate in concert with components like air compressor, turbine, air humidifier, and air cooler. The project aims to develop a model of the fuel cell system including these components. The model is to be implemented in a vehicle model that will be used to optimise system concepts. The research will be carried out in close collaboration with Volvo and Linköping University.

About Lund University, Scania, Sweden –
Lund University is a prestigious university in Sweden and one of northern Europe’s oldest universities. The university is located in the city of Lund in the province of Scania, Sweden. It traces its roots back to 1425, when a Franciscan studium generale was founded in Lund. After Sweden won Scania from Denmark in the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde, the university was officially founded in 1666 on the location of the old studium generale next to Lund Cathedral.
Lund University has nine faculties, with additional campuses in the cities of Malmö and Helsingborg, with 40,000 students in 270 different programmes and 1,300 freestanding courses. The university has some 600 partner universities in nearly 70 countries and it belongs to the League of European Research Universities as well as the global Universitas 21 network. Lund University is consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 universities.
Two major facilities for materials research are in Lund University: MAX IV, a synchrotron radiation laboratory – inaugurated in June 2016, and European Spallation Source (ESS), a new European facility that will provide up to 100 times brighter neutron beams than existing facilities today, to be opened in 2023.
The university centers on the Lundagård park adjacent to the Lund Cathedral, with various departments spread in different locations in town, but mostly concentrated in a belt stretching north from the park connecting to the university hospital area and continuing out to the northeastern periphery of the town, where one finds the large campus of the Faculty of Engineering.
